Artist's Comments

Comming after the grandeur of Caernarfon, the castle at Dolbarden - or tower, as it evidently is rather less than a full castle - might seem like a step down in size and importance.

But most likely due to my contrary and somewhat perverse nature, I found myself enjoying it far more than its huge and stately neighbour.

Stuck atop a lonely hill above Llanberis, Dolbarden consists of a fairly intact main tower with an interior open to the elements, devoid of floors or roof and surrounded by the ruins of what must at one time have been a veritable gaggle of sheds and outhouses.

Unlike the other castles we had seen, this one was built of the native flint and the work of Llywelyn ap Iorweth, a 13th century Prince of Gwynedd to control passage on the important road in the valley below.

The stairs in the tower are cramped and hard going at times, but the view from the top is well worth the climb.

Dolbarden is a romantic place, what with the legacy of the Welsh lords fighting a bitter losing battle against the English king and his ring of mighty castles that closed them all in.

The place put me in mind of Katherine Kerr's Deverry novels, the isolated tower of a single Dun atop a lonely hill on the borders of the Westlands.

I think I might pick up a copy... I have a fair amount of time on my hands, might as well read a good book.

The Deverry novels are very romantic in their style, and Kerr spends a lot of time exploring the inner workings of her character's motivations and minds. The setting is very different as she tried to speculate on the way Celtic society might have developed had the Roman's not conquered Gaul and the tribes that lived there. She's not one to focus on action and gripping adventure, but her characters are some of the best realised in modern fantasy.

Black Knight: Right, I'll do you for that!
King Arthur: You'll what?
Black Knight: Come here!
King Arthur: What are you gonna do, bleed on me?
Black Knight: I'm invincible!
King Arthur: ...You're a loony.

I've had a few moments around these parts where other Deviants have pretty much snuck up and shocked me with their geographical closeness to me!

BTW: At times when we were slogging around all those castles, it did feel a little like the film you quote in your sig.
